How Colleges Are Responding to AI

Colleges are no longer ignoring AI. They’re writing policies around it.

For example, Caltech now publishes clear guidelines on the ethical use of AI in application essays. They warn that relying on large language models to outline or draft essays can:

Dilute an applicant’s real voice, and
Jeopardize an admission offer if policies are violated.

Other selective universities are moving in a similar direction. Some, like Virginia Tech, are even experimenting with AI tools on their side of the process to help read or score essays.
